The theme for Intercamp 2012 is, “A Rendezvous with the American West.”
Overview | The first thought that comes to mind when most persons think of the American West is often thinks of cowboys and Indians, fighting it out on the plains. The reality is the American West took over 100 years to settle and could not have occurred without the hearty work and skills of many European settlers, as well as concessions from many European nations.
At Intercamp 2012 you will experience three areas of the American West, which were influential to the settling of the American West – Native Americans, Mountain Men and pioneers and the cowboy:
Native Americans | The European colonization of the Americas forever changed the lives, bloodlines and cultures of the peoples of the continent. This is especially true of the Native Americans in the West, who nearly lost a vast majority of their culture and history by the end of the 19th Century – our goal is to respectfully honor the first American culture through games and craft.
Mountain Men | From 1825 to 1840 the Rendezvous was the social and business event of the year for the fur traders, where they would meet once a year to conduct business and socialize. After the business of trading the mountain men got down to the serious business of games, telling tales, target shooting and general socializing.
Pioneers and Cowboys | The final push for the West came through the pioneers, who drove their wagon trains west to settle and develop new areas.
Other than the Native American nothing is more symbolic of the American West than the cowboy. The term literally meant boys who work with cows – not necessarily the grown men we often see in the movies. Because of the time and physical ability needed to develop necessary skills, the cowboy often did began his career as a young teen (often as young as 12 or 13) and who, if not hurt before, might handle cattle or horses for the rest of his working life. Interestingly, as early as the late 1800s the introduction of the cowgirl was also seen throughout the west.
Intercamp Hike | Besides experiencing “A Rendezvous with the American West.” in the camp, Scouts and Scouters will also be able to enjoy a hike through nature and a scenic old German town.
An Evening Campfire will be held at the subcamps, the stage will feature Native American Drum and Dance and some more modern evening entertainment. All troops are invited to show off some of their cooking skills a potluck dinner in central camp avenue.
The Sunday Church Service will include some Traditional American gospel and will of course also meet all requirements of a catholic service.
So come and meet some new international friends amongst the 2800 Scouts and Scouters from 10 nations at Intercamp 2012.
The Camp will be hosted by the Boy Scouts of America 25-28 May 2012 in Vilseck. Check back right here for more details on the camp-site coming soon.
